Product Design: Le Boi Skincare Trio
[Prototyping] at Maryland Institute College of Art - Fall 2019
“Gender neutral skincare trio with edgy design for fundamental daily routine.”
I’ve discovered that all my female friends refused to use men’s skincare products. So, I wanted to make Le Boi a gender neutral skincare brand. After research and user interviews, I found common ground between male and female skincare shoppers: they both prefer natural ingredients, a simple yet edgy design, and an ‘easy to follow’ routine.
Objectives & Goals:
Understand the fundamental skincare needs of both male and female customers in the age group of “21-35”
Create daily-use products and routine to cater potential customers’ needs
Unique and bold marketing campaign and packaging design
Explore potential to form a community
User Mapping: Customer Segment
Gained insights on user habits and inspired design preferences.
Sketching and Testing
The main problems in mainstream products: 1. Packaging too feminine or masculine for the opposite sex. 2. Too many options with a complicated routine. 3. Lacked personality.
I started designing the products by creating a routine and writing down key effects of each products. Initially I included 5 products: a face wash, a facial mask, a gel cream, an oil serum, and a body cream. During the first testing, some users found this routine too complicated. Instead, I went for the “wash - moisturize - finish & elevate” routine and created only 3 products: a face wash, a moisturizer and a face oil. I chose the black and white combination for the packaging and logo design. During the second round of testing, users preferred a bold logo yet simple packaging.
High Fidelity Prototype and Outcome
The final product names are listed: the One Minute Wash, Babe Me Aloe gel, and Finish Me Oil. These products combine to form a 3-minute day & night routine: the Skin Drinks Trio. The first step: applying the One Minute Wash. I encouraged users to conduct a proper 1-minute deep clean day and night. With ingredients like Amino Acid, the product protected skin’s natural barrier and a balanced PH level. The second step: Babe Me Aloe gel. This is a natural hydrating product that can calm and reduce fine lines. Lastly: the Finish Me Oil. This product locks hydration inside the skin and also provides a natural glow. The trio is designed for all skin types.
For the last round of testing, I introduced skincare users to the routine and sent samples for a three-day trial. Users gave me extremely positive feedback and expressed that the Skin Drinks Trio had visibly improved their skin condition and gave them naturally looking glow.
I also came up with the slogan: “The one for all,” and a marketing video below.
